NYC Common Sense released the following statement calling on the Mayor to release a comprehensive education plan:

“While the Mayor plans to take a vacation weeks before the start of a new academic year, nearly a million children in the nation’s largest public school system are preparing to head back to classrooms without a real plan from City Hall.

“The Mayor has had two warnings about the need for action this month alone. Reading scores dropped six points citywide, nearly erasing last year’s gains — a 14-point collapse among third graders and a 13-point drop among fifth graders. Days later, the city’s own School Survey showed only 59 percent of students feel academically challenged in class.

“We call on the administration to release a comprehensive education plan that takes into account the complexity of the system, the need for stability and reform, and truly delivers for all students across the five boroughs.”
