NYC Common Sense released the following statement regarding City Hall’s Street Safety Program:
“This administration has missed a real opportunity to address one of the biggest safety issues on New York City streets: reckless operators of e-bikes and other e-vehicles. A so-called street safety plan that fails to seriously address this growing danger that puts both pedestrians, traditional cyclists, and e-vehicle users themselves at grave risk of injury – or even death – is simply incomplete.
Other states and municipalities continue to implement smart and simple e-vehicle safeguards such as age and helmet requirements and registration, yet New York City continues to lag behind. That’s why NYC Common Sense has filed a legal challenge to this administration’s March 2026 order ending the NYPD’s ability to issue criminal summons to e-vehicle riders who break the law. That suit that was amended just last week to include a new plaintiff who was grievously injured due to City Hall’s inexplicable refusal to address this rapidly mounting crisis.
The numbers speak for themselves. NYPD data show that 715 e-bike collisions occurred through the first week of September, which is a year-to year increase of 25 percent. This is unconscionable.
New Yorkers deserve a detailed and comprehensive plan that protects pedestrians, traditional cyclists, and responsible e-vehicle users alike, and City Hall should deliver that without delay.”
